Last week, I was doing some questions for a study when I paused to reflect on the reason we call the gospel “good news”. I know it is good; I call it good, I know it gives me joy, and I know it has been my hope in life. Yet more than this, I see that the good news first permeates right to the core of my soul. It has, and still is transforming my mind, my heart, and my life every day.
In [Romans 1:2-6], Paul describes the gospel of God:
“… promised before through His prophets in the Holy Scriptures, concerning His Son Jesus Christ our Lord, who was born of the seed of David according to the flesh, and declared to be the Son of God with power according to the Spirit of holiness, by the resurrection from the dead. Through Him we have received grace and apostleship for obedience to the faith among all nations for His name, among whom you also are the called of Jesus Christ”
There are so many reasons why the good news is good! It is good because it shows us a good God, and it is good because it shows us how we are transformed in Him.
1. It is promised by God to all nations – freely given from the Father God to all of us.
2. If God was willing to send His own son to save us, we know that He loves us. This is our true and unshakable identity – beloved of God.
3. This isn’t a rash attempt to save people because there was a mistake and sin came into the world. No, God knew that sin would separate Him from man, and He perfectly crafted a solution that would fulfil His love, His justice, and His holiness. Jesus, fully God and fully man, sinless and blameless to die on the cross for all the sins of the world, to obtain once and for all, salvation for all to be joined back to God in intimate relationship.
4. Finally, God calls us. He gives us a purpose in Him, and a purpose in the world that we live in.
The good news of the gospel completely fulfills us if we will receive it. It fulfils our need for identity, for purpose, and for belonging. It fulfils and satisfies because it gives us revelation of our good God – through Him and for Him all things were created [Colossians 1:16]. The news is good!
